Historical Markers

The Angelina County Historical Commission works with the community and the state to ensure that places and people of historical interest in our county are marked for posterity. Each fall, the Texas Historical Commission opens up the application period and releases forms for that year. Prior to that period, the ACHC encourages community members who would like to apply for a marker to contact the ACHC for guidance. The Marker Committee chairperson and other members of the Commission can guide residents through the process of identifying locations worthy of a marker, researching and documenting the history of the site, and preparing to apply. Once the application forms are released by the state, the local commission must approve each application before it can be sent to the state. Members of the ACHC have successfully applied for many markers and have experience with the process and will be happy to help residents with the application process. Applications are due to the ACHC Marker Committee Chairperson in September 2019 for review before being submitted to the state.

    Angelina County, The only county in Texas named for a woman, was named for a Hasinai Indian woman who assisted early Spanish missionaries and they named her Angelina (Little Angel).

The Purpose of the Angelina County Historical Commission is to coordinate and supervise the work of historical preservation in Angelina County.
